Apple Notes on Windows
Notelet is a notes and reminders app installed on your Windows PC and your iPhone, with the same notes on both. Apple has no Notes app for Windows. This guide covers what Apple offers instead, and how to move your notes into Notelet.
Last checked , from each app’s own help pages, for Notelet 0.10.21.
Is there an Apple Notes app for Windows?
No. Apple’s app for Windows, iCloud for Windows, brings your photos, iCloud Drive, passwords, bookmarks, calendars and contacts to the PC. Notes and Reminders aren’t in it. What Apple offers for them is iCloud.com, in a web browser.
Notes in the browser, on iCloud.com
Apple lists Notes and Reminders among what iCloud.com does in a Windows PC’s browser. Sign in at icloud.com/notes and you can read and write notes, add lists, tables and links, sort them into folders and tags, open locked notes, see attachments and share. They’re the same notes as on your iPhone.
It’s a web page in a browser tab, though, not an app on the PC. That suits a quick look; if you keep notes on the PC every day, an installed app is easier to live with.
Notelet for Windows
Notelet installs on Windows 10 and 11, on most PCs (Intel and AMD) and on Arm PCs (Snapdragon and Copilot+), with an .msi for IT departments. On Windows 11 it takes Fluent: Mica under the title bar and sidebar, the menus in the title bar as Windows 11’s own apps draw them, and your Windows accent colour.
It works offline, and your notes and reminders are in one app: folders, smart folders, #tags, checklists, tables and locked notes that open with Windows Hello, beside reminder lists with smart lists, repeats, subtasks and sections. On a PC where you can’t install apps, app.noteletapp.com runs Notelet in the browser, synced through Notelet Cloud.
Moving your notes from Apple Notes
Notelet doesn’t sync with iCloud: you bring your notes across once. Apple Notes writes your notes out as Markdown files on a Mac; without a Mac, Apple’s copy of your data has them too.
With a Mac
- In Notes on the Mac, select the notes to move: click one, then Edit › Select All for a whole folder.
- Choose File › Export To › Markdown and save them in a new folder. Notes writes each note as a folder of its own, with its pictures and files beside it. To keep your Notes folders, export each one into a folder with its name.
- Copy that folder to the PC: on a USB stick, zipped and sent to yourself, or through iCloud Drive, which iCloud for Windows brings to the PC.
- In Notelet on the PC, choose File › Import and Export › Import from Files… and pick the folder, or the
.zip. Notelet shows what’s in it, folder by folder, and nothing changes until you choose Import.
Without a Mac
- On the PC, sign in at privacy.apple.com and choose Request a copy of your data.
- Choose iCloud Notes, then Continue. Apple tells you when the copy is ready, and you have 14 days to download it.
- In Notelet, choose Import from Files… (File › Import and Export) and pick the download, as a
.zipor unzipped.
Notelet reads the Notes in Apple’s download as folders of text files with their attachments. This route is less tested than the Mac’s: Apple doesn’t publish how the download is laid out.
Your reminders come from the iPhone: in Notelet for iPhone, choose Settings › Import and Export › Import from Apple Reminders…, and your lists sync to the PC with their dates, priorities and repeats.
What comes across
- Each note’s title and words
- Checklists, ticked or not
- Monostyled text, as code blocks
- Pictures and other attachments, where they were in the note
- Your folders, when you export each one into a folder of its own
What doesn’t
- The dates notes were written and changed: Notes’ Markdown export leaves them out, so each note takes its file’s date
- Locks: remove them in Notes before you export (below)
- Sharing: a shared note comes across as your own copy, and Notelet can’t share notes yet
- Anything you change in Apple Notes afterwards: it’s a move, not a sync
Locked notes
Notelet can’t open a note that’s locked in Apple Notes, and Apple’s guide to exporting doesn’t say what happens to one. So before you export, open each locked note in Notes and choose File › Remove Lock.
Once it’s in Notelet, lock it again there. All your locked notes share one password, and on Windows they open with Windows Hello where it’s set up; on an iPhone, with Face ID or Touch ID. A locked note can hold pictures and files too, sealed with the same password.
Keeping your iPhone in step
Notelet doesn’t sync with Apple Notes, so to have the same notes on the PC and your iPhone, use Notelet on both. Notelet for iPhone is in public beta on TestFlight.
- Install Notelet on the PC and on the iPhone.
- On each, turn on sync in Settings › Sync, with the same Notelet Cloud account, or the same S3 or WebDAV storage of your own.
- Change a note on one and the other has it a moment later. Edits made on both at once are merged, not lost.
On a computer, Notelet can also sync through a folder that OneDrive, Dropbox or iCloud Drive keeps in step, but a phone can’t: for the iPhone, use Notelet Cloud, S3 or WebDAV. Pictures and files sync with your notes, through storage of your own or through Notelet Cloud, where every account has 1 GB free with files up to 25 MB, and Plus has 50 GB with files up to 512 MB.
